Sunstone Press, Bideford, Devon, 1987
First edition (prints).
A series of 28 offset-printed colour plates of animals by R. J. Lloyd, each with the accompanying poem by Hughes printed below. Produced on cream 'laid' paper, the prints are uniformly 29.8 x 22.0 cm. Loose in the original grey paper folder with tissue guards between the sheets and a white card label titled in black loosely inserted as issued. All prints present and in fine state. A few tissues creased and nicked and a wavy line of scribble in black ink to verso of the card label. A near fine set overall.
Published at £450.00 for the set or £20.00 apiece. 200 copies of each sheet were printed.
In a letter to Keith Sagar in March 1987, Hughes explained that the set was conceived as a long connected frieze for nurseries, which might explain why it is so scarce complete and in anything approaching collectable condition.
This was the first publication by Hughes and Lloyd under their Sunstone Press imprint, to be followed the same year by a limited book edition of 2000 copies of which 250 were numbered and signed by poet and artist.
