Faber & Faber, London, 1945
First Edition, First Impression.
Octavo. Yellow cloth boards titled to spine in gilt. Top edges of boards a little spotted, tips of corners lightly bumped. Otherwise a near fine copy, in a toned and worn dust jacket (unclipped) with some chips, nicks and closed tears to extremities and two scratches to upper panel (these haven't shown through to the other side of the jacket or marked the board).
Ownership inscription to front free endpaper, "Raymond Mills, Rhodes, 1946", and below a presentation inscription from Durrell, "for Ray Mills from Larry Durrell (first ed. Lucky Dog!)". Dr Raymond Mills was in charge of the medical service on Rhodes while Durrell lived on the island. The two struck up a friendship which lasted until the author's death in 1990. Mills is a central character in Durrell's book on Rhodes, Reflections on a Marine Venus (1953) and is also mentioned in the author's Acknowledgements to that book.
Prospero's Cell is Durrell's delightful picture of Corfu before the property developers moved in.
